And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14

--

The glory of the gospel lies in this: that the Son of God came down and took our flesh. He who is from everlasting did not abhor the virgin’s womb, nor disdain to become bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. He took not upon Him the nature of angels, but the seed of Abraham. He became what we are, that He might make us what we are not. Though He was rich, for our sakes He became poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich. Consider the depth of this condescension. The Son of the Highest stooped to enter the low estate of man, and that in its infirmity.

And He took our nature never to lay it down again. He wears it now in heaven. The man Christ Jesus sits at the right hand of God. This is our boldness and assurance. Our nature is on the throne of the Majesty on high. The same Christ who suffered for sinners now intercedes for them. The same humanity that was nailed to the tree is now crowned in glory. Therefore, every believer may draw near with confidence. The Mediator is not ashamed to call them brethren. He knows our frame, for He has borne it. He knows our weakness, for He has felt it. He knows our temptations, for He has endured them.

Christ did not merely visit humanity; He assumed it forever. He did not merely appear as man; He became man. He did not merely act like us; He was made like us in every respect except sin. Though He is now exalted, He is not distant. The nature in which He bled is the nature in which He reigns. The body that lay in the manger is the body in which He judges the world in righteousness. The wonder of all wonders is that the everlasting God is truly man, and the true man is everlasting God.
