“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” - Isaiah 7:14
--
There was never a miracle of God that was not full of mystery. Yet among all the works of the Eternal, there has never been a wonder so vast as the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He who made all things must be born of a creature whom He Himself had fashioned. The Infinite must become an infant. He upon whose shoulders the universe hangs must hang upon a woman’s breast. He who created all worlds must be wrapped in swaddling clothes. The King of ages must be cradled in a manger. Great is the mystery of godliness, God manifest in the flesh. This is the doctrine which is the foundation of all others in the faith once delivered to the saints. If Christ were not God, the law would not be honored in His obedience, nor the atonement satisfy divine justice. No man could perform the righteousness which the law of God demands, yet the God-man has done it. No one could pay the debt of human guilt, yet the God-man has paid it. Therefore rejoice, O believer. He who was born of Mary is the Mighty God. He who lay in Bethlehem is the Everlasting Father. Angels sang His praise, and well they might, for He is the fullness of the Godhead dwelling bodily. Here is comfort for all who trust in Him. He took our nature that He might take our place. He entered our world that He might bear our sin. He was born that He might die. And in dying, He destroyed death for all who rest in His name. Look then to the manger and behold your Savior. Look to the child and see the Almighty. Look to the infant and see the Redeemer. For in Him, God and man are perfectly united to save all who believe.
